Internships are the most common way of gaining experience for fresh new graduate students. But there are many internships in India which are unpaid, further even jobs are unpaid.
In a country which resides the youngest population in the world, competition for jobs are stiff.
There fore people do unpaid jobs to gain experience in the hope of getting a better job later.
Now comparing it with other developed countries where there is laws on salaries, In Australia an employer cannot pay an employee less than $20 /hour (1000 Rs /hour).
If such employer is found guilty, actions are taken against the employer and also the employee for working under minimal wage.
Every year 11 million graduate students from college look for jobs.
Because of the huge unemployment in the country, they have to work for free, they are sometimes not even given basic facilities like food, transportation or accommodation. Which means they are paying to work.
There is no law in India which guidelines the internship exploitation. Ethically unpaid internships and jobs are not right. Ethics do not promote unpaid work. But, since ethics is not a force the employers reckon, they continue to exploit the human resource of the country.
Everyone should get paid for their work, if it is an internship or job. Ethics is screaming out loud to become a Law when it comes to unpaid work.
What is your view on unpaid internships and jobs? Would you do one just to gain experience?
